Kennedy girls win title

Prior to the Valley Junior High School Athletic League's soccer playoffs, only Egan of Mountain View kept Kennedy Middle School's 6th-7th grade team out of the win column. In fact during 10 regular season games, the only blemish on the Cougars' record was a tie with Egan.

So, it was fitting that Kennedy and Egan met again in the VJHSAL championship game. Kennedy had shut out Cupertino, 3-0, in the semifinals, but Egan quickly gained the upper hand in the title match.

Egan, which reached the finale with a 2-1 triumph over Blach of Los Altos, earned early leads of 1-0 and 2-1. But the Cougars roared back, scoring the decisive goal with less than eight minutes to go, and held on for a 3-2 victory.

The champion Cougars, led by coach Larry Blair, finished the season with a record of 11-0-1. Team members were Sammy Barry, Danielle Beiser, Clare Foxcroft, Grace Huang, Lauryn Kistner, Sandra Ley, Gabriella Ley, Olivia Li, Zohar Liebermensch, Mariel Little, Nicole Lou, Mary Matsunami, Vivian Mueller, Claire Nastari, Jacqueline Pedrazza, Kristen Tatsuno, Cheryl Tom and Stella Ziegler.
